Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question we didn't cover here? Give us a call.

How often should jewelry be appraised?

Every two years, or sooner during periods of significant market movement, which is exactly what we're seeing right now. Gold prices have more than doubled since early 2024, and an outdated appraisal can leave a significant gap between your insurance coverage and what it would actually cost to replace your piece today.

What happens at a jewelry appraisal appointment?

You're welcome to sit with us while we work. Our gemologist will examine each piece under magnification, assess the materials, gemstones, and craftsmanship, and walk you through what they're seeing.

A single piece typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes. If you're bringing in a larger collection, you can leave it with us and we'll call you when it's ready.

You'll receive a written jewelry appraisal documenting each item's characteristics and current replacement value, which is the document your insurance company needs to set or update your coverage.

Who is qualified to appraise jewelry?

A qualified jewelry appraiser should hold a Graduate Gemologist (GG) credential from the Gemological Institute of America or equivalent gemological training. This means they can accurately identify gemstones, detect treatments and synthetics, and assess quality under magnification.

Without that training, appraisals often contain errors in stone identification or grading that can cost you when it's time to file a claim.

Our jewelry appraisals are conducted by GIA-certified gemologists with decades of hands-on experience.

What kinds of jewelry should be appraised?

Any piece you'd want to replace if it were lost, stolen, or damaged. Engagement rings, wedding bands, diamond studs, fine gemstone jewelry, inherited pieces, and anything with significant gold or platinum content.

Most homeowners and renters policies have a low default coverage limit on jewelry, often $1,000 to $2,500, so anything above that threshold should be individually scheduled with your insurer, and that requires a professional jewelry appraisal.

How much does a jewelry appraisal cost?

Jewelry appraisals at Sundance Jewelers are $85 for the first item and $45 for each additional item.

What if my jewelry has never been appraised before?

A lot of jewelry doesn't come with an appraisal, especially inherited pieces or older purchases. A receipt or diamond grading report is not an appraisal. A grading report documents a stone's characteristics but doesn't assign a monetary value. A jewelry appraisal establishes the current replacement value of the complete piece, including the setting, metalwork, and labor, which is what your insurance company needs. If you have any existing documentation, bring it along. It gives our gemologist useful reference points.

Can I get my jewelry appraised remotely?

If Sundance Jewelers did your original appraisal, we can update it remotely. Contact us and we'll walk you through the process.

If your jewelry appraisal was done elsewhere, you'll need to have it updated by a local gemologist who can examine the piece in person.

Do you appraise jewelry purchased elsewhere?

Yes. Bring in any piece and we'll take it from there.
